Opal is Australia's national gemstone. Australian opal is renown for its play of colour and around 97% of the world's opal is produced in Australia. Opal is mined at shallow depths and was formed between 15 and 30 million years ago.
It is a mineraloid gel deposited at relatively low temperatures and may occur in the fissures of almost any kind of rock.
Triplet opals are a slice of real opal sandwiched between a darkened backing of either common opal, porcelain or glass and a quartz crystal face. The three sections are cemented together with clear resin adhesive to provide an economical way of obtaining beautiful opal at a fraction of the price of solid opal.
