Huon pine is one of the slowest-growing and longest living plants in the world. It can grow to an age of 3,000 years or more. The tree is wholly protected and cannot be felled. However, wood on the forest floor remains usable and is highly prized, not least because of its sweet aroma.
It has a unique oiliness that has preserved logs submerged in water for hundreds of years. Boat builders in the early days of settlement (not surprisingly) valued it highly.
The richness of its golden colour and figure make it one of the world’s most desirable furniture and veneering timbers. Its fine and even grain means that the wood works well with hand tools. It is particularly popular for carving.
The pen is supplied with and uses an international standard sized refill that is used by many manufacturers of 'boutique' pens. The pen may be 'posted', ie. the cap can be fitted to the end of the main barrel while in use.
